Schemata

On this page I will write about different schemata, or bass motions if you like, occurring in the guitar literature around the 19th century.

Schemata theory can be thought of as musical modules. A bit like LEGO, where you can combine different parts to create a whole. There are many different schemata out there and the terminology goes in many different directions. On this section of the website I will use a combination of the terms created by R. Gjerdingen found in his book Music in the Galant Style (2020), and sometime names/terms by other schemata theorists. Occasionally I find the schemata names used in Music in the Galant Style, and their execution, to be difficult to remember. So when I see fit, I will use more straight forward names and explanatory terms.

In the comprehensive guitar school Escula de Guitarra c. 1825 Aguado provides us with information on the fundamentals of harmonic progressions when improvising preludes.
